Developing Ideas

Before presenting to the class our ideas we worked on our storyboard. Were in the process of printing out photos to create a visual storyboard for our music video. On postit notes were going to talk about each shot in our story board explaing, camera shots/angles, effects and techniques we want to use to create our acoustic effect. We need to take more photos and we need to draw more objects i.e headphones, guitar, steps etc.

After pitching to the class we realised that were definite gaps in our understanding as a group on what exactly we are going to film. Therefore not only are we going to produce the visual collage storyboard idea but we will draw up a draft of our storyboard for next lesson. We all are thinking on the same wave length, however are not clear on precisely what order all of our ideas are going to go in when it comes to editing our footage.

Ideas that are opposing problems
As shown in the visual collage storyboards, we were going to use a recording studio filmed in black and white as part of our music video. We realised that the idea of Joanna imagining she was in a recording studio as an established artist was rather cliche and that it was more likely she'd be imagining herself playing to a big crowd. more so than a recording studio. Also as we have brought in the idea of a narrative alongside Joanna performing in the band stand we think that this complete contrast in location will provide difficult to understand and unnecessary.

Ideas we are keeping

The bandstand is in keeping with the style that Joanna already has. The bandstand is normally a performance area, however is an open space for the public to use. The framework may allow us to place a camera above joanna, so we can have a variety of shots, not just at the same level. The bandstand is raised, so that Joanna comes across as having presence and can observe the other couple we are involving in our video. We are going to see if we can use depth of field to blur out the couple so Joanna is still the focus early on in the music video.

New additions to our list for storyboard

After listening to 'In your Bones' in more detail we noticed there were certain points in the song where the mood or beats per bar changed. Therefore we felt the part of the song which is more of an attack at the boy in description needed a change of location. We have decided on a dark urban scene. The night sky being a pathetic fallacy for her darkened mood. This scene will provide something different to the video as we think that it might get a bit monotonous with just the park scene. Shooting in daylight throughout might make the song seem more light hearted than we would want.

We are going to have Joanna walking briskly towards the camera down a lit up quiet street. This idea was influenced by Avril Lavignes I'm With You Video, directed by David LaChapelle. The video is of Avril walking towards the camera .Most of the video is in slow motion, however Lavigne's mouth movements are in sync with the song's vocals. This was done by recording the footage while the song was played twice the speed.

Final outline...

  • Start with Joanna in Bandstand, focusing on her guitar and singing. (showing off her musical abilities)
  • Incorporate establishing shots of Grove Park
  • Introduce two other characters ( the boy Joanna likes with another girl) using a shallow depth of field, framing them in the background whilst Joanna is still singing and playing guitar on the bandstand and being the main focus.
  • Shots of Boy and Girl laughing being friendly, holding hands 360 degree
  • keeping the same hands held...camera pans up to joannas face so joanna is now holding the boys hand
  • almost as if she is following them. using the Jill Dandow garden in grove park. Shots of her walking through the blue wood beams. camera behind the wood tracking her movement, so shes not visible for a fraction of a second each time she goes behind the beams.
  • Cuts back to bandstand? performance
  • Mood in song changes, now walking towards camera in the middle of a lit up road in the dark, whilst camera is moving backwards too. (not sure how to walk backwards without shaking camera yet..)
  • Back to bandstand again.
