Mis en Scene: Costume

Costume is an important factor when it comes to mis en scene in the video. The way an artist dresses is always in accordance to the target audience and vice versa; the target audience will have their favourite artists as style icons.

I have looked at various artists men and women of all genres and eeras and how they dress complying with target audience, the style of their audience and what image they would like to create.

Florence Welch

Florence the frontwoman to Florence and the Machine, was originally an art student. This is visible in the way she styles herself on stage and off. Her bohemiam outlook/free spirit is well potrayed in the clothes that she wears. For example in the video for Rabbit Heart she wears a white floaty dress with hair pieces. With the eccentric folk-art style to her music this image keeps in fit with her overall persona. The combination of her creative personality and unusual fashion with the sound of her music is why the visuals in all of her videos work so well.

Lady GaGa

Lady Gaga is renowned for over extravagent style. The american recording artists' unique dress code is what makes her stand out from other pop artists. She most famously wore a dress made out of raw meat to a recent awards ceromony. The costumes she wears in her videos are always suited to the video, no matter how eccentric they are. Without her reputation for a bizare yet individual style she may not have such a strong identity as a musician.

Pharrell Williams

When we used to think of Hip-hop music it immediatel had connotations of baggy white t-shirts, 'bling' and baggy jeans. However the fashion in this style of music has changed considerably due to artists such as Pharrell, Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Jay Z. Pharrell Williams has flair and creativity with his outfits – mixing bold colours, patterns and using key accessories like scarves, sunglasses and watches to really stand out. These bold fashion statements get him noticed as an artist. His listeners want to dress like him and therefore inspired by every costume he wears in his videos. He even has his own clothing line named 'Billionaire Boys Club'.

Karen O. (YEAH YEAH YEAHS)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an american indie band from New York, who have been recording since 2000. I really like the way her clothes reflect her quirky and rebellious character and are suited to the music she creates.Her stage clothes never really differ from what she wears everyday which shows that her personality on stage is the same as who she is in real life.
